Roy Kunisaki

Ceramics

Sea life, stone, and the quiet forms in between.

Roy Kunisaki was introduced to ceramics by accident in high school, and what began as chance grew into a lifelong practice. In 1997, he established his studio at Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, where he has been shaping his voice in clay ever since.

His mission is to bridge his Japanese background with a life shaped in California. Inspired by the ocean, the mountains, and the quiet coexistence of nature and human invention, Roy channels that relationship into ceramic art — work that feels grounded in landscape yet alive with cultural memory.

Roy is a represented artist at Stellar Art Gallery in Torrance, California.

“My mission is to bridge my Japanese background with a life shaped in California.”

From Apprentice to Studio Artist

Angels Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro · Est. 1997

Roy came up under a master craftsman — training that, in his words, prepares you to survive in the real world. That foundation shows up everywhere in his practice: in the discipline of the wheel, in the patience of the kiln, and in a body of work that continuously rotates between sea life sculpture, boulder-inspired vessels, and simple thrown forms. What might look like restlessness is actually the rhythm of a working artist — each style feeding the next.
